The Pope's visit

WRG were contracted by the Catholic Bishops Conference (CBC) and the Foreign and Commonwealth office (FCO) to manage the infrastructure planning for the State Visit of his Holiness Pope Benedict XVI to the UK. This was the first ever state visit of a Pope to the UK and took place over four days including four major outdoor events attended by hundreds of thousands of Pilgrims.

WRG undertook the entire management (Including logistics and technical infrastructure) for ‘The Big assembly’ located at St Marys college Twickenham, a Mass at Westminster cathedral, the management and liaison of the Popes Visit to St Peters London and the finale event, the beatification of Cardinal Newman in Cofton Park, Birmingham.

The Cofton Park event alone was attended by over 55,000 pilgrims and included the preparation of a 25 acre site to accommodate over 2,000 choir, 1,000 Priests and 100 Bishops. WRG designed and installed a central covered sanctuary with a stained glass effect back drop and screens for relay of the image of Cardinal Newman during the mass. The event was broadcast live by BBC TV around the world and radio 4 broadcast morning worship from the site.

The Cofton Park pilgrimage is widely regarded as one of the biggest events of its kind in recent times and has attracted huge critical acclaim for its contemporary design and smooth running, as well as the quality of sound and technical infrastructure. The Pope and Vatican officials have proclaimed the entire event as a ‘huge success’ and a ‘deeply moving experience’.
